I enjoyed Hotel Transylvania. A bit of basic non-demanding cartoon fun.
Like so much of what comes out from Hollywood very much over-hyped, but then nothing unusual in that these days. One thing though, the trailers are a bit misleading. Where they show a human (Jonathan) coming into the monster hotel and disrupting things, the real story is far more tilted towards Dracula and his over-protective relationship to his daughter (with a sideline around the bigotry that can develop through failing to interact with people who are different from you).
The actual storyline of parent / daughter / boyfriend and the way it developed was a bit too cliché and predictable. As fun as it was it was missing that bit of sparkle and originality that turns an ‘all right’ film into a really good one. However there was still plenty to laugh at, both to entertain kids and for adults.
The film itself was a fast moving one with lots of visual activity, you never have to wait long before the next bit of action happens; however the overall style of the film did made me think ‘Cartoon Network’. Sony Pictures Animation has made a good effort here but has a long way to go before they can compete against the likes of Pixar, DreamWorks or Aardman.
Overall I liked the film but wonder how much better it could have been if done by one of the more experienced animation studios.
